Southeast Asia consists of two geographic regions. The Asian mainland and Volcanics or Cluster island. South-East Asia covers an area of about 4,500,000 square kilometers, population about 570,000,000 (2006). The mainland section containing the following countries; Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and Vietnam. The Island section consists of Brunei, East Timor Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Singapore.
Southeast Asia is located on the equator, which means almost the entire region falls within the humid tropics. A tropical rainy climate dominates most of Southeast Asia, with the exception of the northwestern part, which is generally humid subtropical. Tropical forests cover most of the region. Important crops include rice (the chief crop of the area), rubber, tea, spices, and coconuts. The region is rich in mineral resources. Most of the world's tin is produced here.
